Major earthquake off Sumatra sends shockwaves again

PETALING JAYA: An earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale hit just off the coast of Sumatra about 245km from Medan and 535km from here – at 12.09am and tremors were felt on the entire west coast of the peninsula causing tens of thousands of people to be evacuated from their high-rise homes and hotels.

# Bukit Aman issued a warning to all state police headquarters to be on full alert including making preparations to evacuate people from coastal areas mainly in Penang and Kedah, especially Langkawi, were worse than the Dec 26 earthquake that brought the tsunami.

# No casualty or damage was reported in Malaysia.

# Thailand, India, Africa and Indonesia all issued tsunami warnings.
